VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Crime Victims
Assistance Program began in 1979.Tthe program relies on volunteers
from the community to support the paid advocates in working
with victims of crime. As an integral part of the prosecution
team, the victim advocates work closely with the attorneys
and investigators to assure that victims’ rights are
protected throughout the criminal justice process. The commitment
of volunteers from the community allows the unit to serve
the residents of Ventura County in a thorough and attentive
manner.
Volunteers are utilized in various ways, depending upon their
skill. Some of the duties asked a volunteer may include:
· Court support
· Administrative support (typing, copying, filing,
or data entry)
· Community Referrals
· Phone contact with the public
· Special project support
Volunteer hours may be flexible and can be given around ones
work or school schedule; however, the unit relies on the consistency
and attendance of volunteers for support. Therefore, those
interested in volunteering for the program are asked to commit
to a minimum of 8 hours a week and remain with the unit for
at least 6 months. Because of the nature of working with victims
of crime, volunteers must meet the following qualifications:
· Be 18 years of age or older
· Free of a criminal record and must consent to and
pass an in-depth background investigation
· Complete a mandatory orientation and training with
the Volunteer Coordinator.
· Must be computer literate.
By becoming a volunteer for the Ventura County Crime Victims
Assistance unit, you can gain knowledge and experience in
working within the criminal justice system as well as a chance
to help individuals through an often traumatic and difficult
time in their lives. Volunteers are given ongoing support
and training opportunities. If you are interested, you may
