In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

The Major Crimes Unit handles all homicide cases and selected high-profile matters, such as investigations of officer-involved shootings. Within the unit, all cases are handled vertically, which means that a single attorney prosecutes the case from beginning (filing of a criminal complaint) to the end (sentencing). A major crimes prosecutor is on call at all times and is available to respond to the scene of a homicide, officer-involved shooting or other critical incident to assist law enforcement. The chief deputy district attorney directly supervises the unit.
