In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

The Juvenile Unit handles cases that fall within the provisions of Welfare & Institutions Code § 600, et seq. (minors under the age of 18 who violate the law).

Juvenile cases are referred to the District Attorney by the Juvenile Intake Unit of the Corrections Services Agency (probation department). Many juvenile offenders are handled directly by the Youth Services or Juvenile Intake units of the probation department without referral to the District Attorney. To determine whether a juvenile case has been referred to the District Attorney or remains with probation, call (805) 388-4425. To learn the name of the assigned deputy district attorney, call the juvenile records at (805) 981-5860. If further assistance is necessary after contact with the assigned deputy district attorney, the Juvenile Unit supervisor can be contacted at (805) 654-2500.
