In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

A recent addition to the General Felony/Misdemeanor Unit is the Community Prosecution Program. The program provides specialized prosecutorial services directly to local law enforcement, residents, and businesses. A seasoned prosecutor is assigned to work in the police department as an "in-house" prosecutorial resource. The community prosecutor handles the traditional responsibilities of reviewing and filing misdemeanor complaints. In addition, the prosecutor participates in briefings, law enforcement training, and community outreach. As a result, the community prosecutor is more familiar with the unique concerns of various neighborhoods and business centers and is able to provide special attention and consideration to problems arising in those areas. The prosecutor also provides specialized legal assistance to law enforcement responding to those problems. The cities of Thousand Oaks, Santa Paula, and Oxnard participate in the Community Prosecution Program.
