In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

Chief Assistant District Attorney

The Chief Assistant District Attorney is responsible for the day-to-day management of the District Attorney’s Office, reporting directly to the District Attorney. In the District Attorney’s absence, the Chief Assistant functions as the District Attorney.

The Chief Assistant District Attorney confers with chief deputy district attorneys and attorney staff on major filing decisions in significant cases and provides direction and recommendations in keeping with office policies.

In addition to managing the office, the Chief Assistant District Attorney is also responsible for recruiting and hiring new attorney staff. The Chief Assistant District Attorney decides attorney assignments.

Budgetary matters are referred to the Chief Assistant District Attorney for review, recommendation, and approval. Office policies and procedures are reviewed and updated by the Chief Assistant District Attorney as needed.

The Chief Assistant District Attorney coordinates interactions with outside public and private agencies. The Chief Assistant District Attorney is often called upon to speak to citizen groups as well as other professional organizations.
