In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that the grand jury has indicted Jaime Paredes (DOB 1/24/1979) for the July 1, 2009, mass shooting at Family Dental Care in Simi Valley . Parades' wife, Mariela Paredes, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional employees received serious gunshot wounds but survived. The grand jury indicted Paredes for one count of murder by means of lying in wait, three counts of pre-meditated attempted murder, assault with a firearm, false imprisonment, burglary, and weapons enhancements for the unlawful use of a firearm.

Paredes is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment at 9:00 a.m. January 19, 2010, in courtroom 12 of the Ventura County Superior Court. Paredes is currently being held without bail. The district attorney has made no decision on whether to seek the death penalty.
