In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Chrystal Ceja (DOB 8/3/85) of Oxnard , pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact of murder and money laundering. Ceja was one of six defendants indicted in the case of People v. Jeffrey Aguilar. Ceja, who shares two children with Aguilar, was indicted for her conduct following the murder of Gurmohinder Singh.

 

On August 16, 2008, Gurmohinder Singh was robbed and murdered as he left U.S. Bank in Oxnard . Within hours of the murder, Ceja purchased a vehicle for Aguilar using the cash obtained in the robbery. In the days following the murder, Ceja engaged in spending sprees. During this time, she had knowledge of where Aguilar was staying and how to reach him.

 

On August 23, 2008, Oxnard Police Officers Rocky Marquez and Robert Shank attempted to apprehend Aguilar. Aguilar shot at the officers numerous times, fleeing in the vehicle Ceja had purchased for him. When she was contacted on August 23, 2008, Ceja refused to provide officers with information as to Aguilar's whereabouts.

 

Sentencing in this matter will be held on August 3, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court.
