In 1989, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office became the first office in California to successfully introduce D.N.A. "genetic fingerprinting" evidence in a criminal case.

District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that the Grand Jury has indicted Antonio Cervantes (DOB. 8/17/85), Joy Cox (DOB 3/19/58), Manuel Elwell (DOB 4/28/89), and Ricardo Rodriguez (DOB 7/15/88) in connection with a conspiracy to burglarize Camarillo residences between November 27, 2007, and December 19, 2007. The indictment accuses Cervantes, Elwell, and Rodriguez of conspiring to commit burglaries in the city of Camarillo and in fact burglarizing or attempting to burglarize at least 11 houses during the time frame. The indictment further accuses Cox of knowingly receiving stolen property from members of the conspiracy.

 

The indicted co-conspirators were apprehended and arrested by sheriff's investigators assigned to the Camarillo Police Department on December 19, 2007, following an extensive investigation and surveillance operation.

 

Antonio Cervantes was on felony probation for the crime of residential burglary at the time the above-described offenses were committed; if convicted, he faces up to 31 years in prison. Rodriguez faces up to 15 years and four months in prison, Manuel Elwell faces up to 12 years and 8 months in prison, and Joy Cox faces up to three years in prison.
